Imagine you were hungry and someone gave you a handful of grapes. You'd be hungry again 3 seconds later. 🍇 That's why I've started putting more protein into the kids' snacks, so they stay full. These yoghurt jars almost don't look like a snack. But make them look pretty, and the kids will definitely think it's one. I whip collagen powder into the yoghurt, then layer homemade granola with puffed quinoa, blueberries, honey yoghurt and coconut flakes. Bop. That's it. The star of the show? Chicken liver. 🥕 I know that sounds funny for a kids' snack. But it's a nutrient-dense, high-protein dip, basically a pâté, and I'll serve it up to the kids with carrots. Cooked chicken liver, chickpeas and ricotta, all blitzed together. Mine could be a tiny bit smoother, but we're just doing what we can do. The rest goes in the freezer for later. The first time I grew spring onion, it grew absolutely massive. Nothing like the little stringy ones from the shops. 🌱 I don't actually do the groceries (Samantha does 😂), but even I know they come in a little rubber band and they're quite small. So now I plant them close on purpose. I harvest the middle ones a little early, and those are your small grocery-size spring onions. That makes more space, so the rest can grow bigger. I'm not afraid to plant things close anymore. When I first started gardening, I watched every YouTube video I could find. I just wanted someone to tell me exactly how to do it. 🥔 The truth is, this probably isn't the best way to plant potatoes. Other people have different soil, different size garden beds and different amounts of sun. Nobody can make a video that shows you the perfect way. So if you're new like me, breathe a sigh of relief. Give it a go, learn this year and do it better next year. Oh, and make sure the sprouts are facing up. 😉 Watch the full episode for a whole spring day in the garden: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1x9IykFg6_s #homesteadontherock #beginnergardener #growyourownfood #australiahomesteading

First Time Pruning and It Got Biblical #homesteadontherock #pruning #christianfamily First time ever pruning our fruit trees, and honestly, we had no idea what we were doing. 🍑 Two branches on this peach tree were blossoming. The third was shooting straight up with nothing happening on it. Thomas thinks it's the rootstock, and our very knowledgeable tree friend suggested cutting it off. It didn't feel right. But if a branch doesn't produce fruit, it's chopped off. That's biblical, and you can't argue with the Word of God. Still felt criminal, though. Watch the rest of the first pruning session in the full episode, plus how we're turning our fruit trees into a green chicken run: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zH73tpQAa6M #homesteadontherock #pruning #fruittrees #christianfamily

Why My Fruit Trees Wear Garden Pots #homesteadontherock #backyardchickens #fruittrees We built a green chicken run so our chickens and fruit trees could share the space. The chickens had other ideas. 🐔 Every time we left a crater of mulch around a tree, they scratched it back into a volcano and buried the root flare, which is meant to stay exposed. So we stacked logs around the edge as a border and placed an old garden pot around the base of each trunk. One of you suggested the pot idea in the comments, and it's worked really well. The mulch stays out and the trunk can breathe. Watch the full episode, where we prune our fruit trees for the very first time, plant herbs under every tree and dog-proof the run: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zH73tpQAa6M #homesteadontherock #backyardchickens #fruittrees #australiahomesteading
